Nashville, TN (My Sportsbook) - Pittsburgh quarterback Tommy Maddox left Sunday's 31-23 loss to the
Tennessee Titans with what appeared to be a serious neck injury.
Reports after the game were positive, however, and stated that Maddox has feeling in all his extremities. He will be kept overnight in Baptist Hospital for observation.
Maddox was injured on the final play of the third quarter as he attempted to scramble out of the pocket. While falling to the ground and throwing the ball away, he was hit high by Keith Bulluck and was motionless on the field. Maddox was immobilized on a stretcher after a long delay and was taken off the field in an ambulance.
"I really didn't know he was hurt at first," said Bulluck. "He simply threw the ball and I just fell on him. You never want to see a player down that long and you don't like to see the ambulance come out onto the field. When I walked over to him to wish him well, he moved and gave a motion like he was going to be all right. I just told him I was going to pray for him to get better."
The former MVP of the now-defunct XFL, Maddox replaced Kordell Stewart, who had started 30-straight games for the Steelers, in week five. He turned around a struggling Pittsburgh offense with his play and threw for an astonishing 473 yards last Sunday against Atlanta.
Stewart came in for Maddox on Sunday and completed 13 of his 17 passes for 124 yards and two scores to lead a late rally, but the comeback attempt came up short as the Steelers (5-4-1) lost for the first time in six weeks.
"To see him go out in that fashion, that's the last thing anyone would want to have happen," said Stewart. "Regardless of what you may think that I was bitter or upset I never was. The decision was made to give him the opportunity and he took advantage. He's a good guy and no one deserves to go through that."
Maddox was drafted by Denver in 1992 (25th overall) after leaving college following his sophomore season at UCLA. He played four years in the NFL with the Broncos, Rams and Giants before getting back into the league with the Steelers last season.
