Philadelphia, PA (My Sportsbook) -
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb fractured his right ankle in Sunday's 38-14 win over the
Arizona Cardinals. He is expected to be out 6-to-8 weeks.
Arizona recovered a fumble after sacking McNabb, who hurt his ankle on the third play from scrimmage and had to be helped from the field. He played through pain nearly the rest of the game before yielding to Koy Detmer for Philadelphia's final offensive possession in the fourth quarter.
"I just pretty much blocked it out," McNabb said of the pain. "Being on the sideline it probably hit me a couple of times. All throughout the game I just focused on what we needed to do to put more points on the board."
The official injury is a broken fibula, one of two bones in the lower leg, near the ankle. X-rays after the game showed the break.
McNabb tied a career-high with four touchdown passes despite fracturing his ankle. He completed 20-of-25 passes for 255 yards, as the Eagles moved to 7-3 with Sunday's win and lead the NFC East by one game over the New York Giants.
McNabb, who turns 26 later this month, has accounted for nearly 72 percent of Philadelphia's total offense this year. He has rushed for 460 yards and six touchdowns while completing 211-of-361 passes for 2,289 yards, with 17 TDs and six interceptions.
Earlier this year, McNabb signed a new 12-year contract worth about $115 million, which made him the highest-paid player in NFL history. McNabb also got a $20.5 million signing bonus. The new contract makes McNabb an Eagle through the 2013 season.
Now it will likely be Detmer's turn to take over as the starting signal caller. The 29-year-old Detmer started five games for the Eagles in 1998, but has thrown just two passes this season.
"People may talk down on Koy, may talk down on the rest of the guys that we have," said McNabb. "But I think that whoever may step in if I'm not there is going to open up some eyes and I think the offense is going to continue on."
The Rams also have a star quarterback who got hurt in two-time MVP Kurt Warner, and McNabb said just like the St. Louis situation, the Eagles will bounce back. The Rams started the season 0-5, but have since won four straight games with Marc Bulger at the helm.
"No matter if you're a Pro Bowl quarterback, no matter if you're a backup quarterback, when given the opportunity you've been preparing all throughout just like you were the starter," McNabb said of Detmer. "When the opportunity is there take full advantage, and I think Koy will do the same."
