Ashburn, VA (My Sportsbook) -
Washington Redskins head coach Steve Spurrier said Monday either Danny Wuerffel or Patrick Ramsey will start at quarterback for Sunday's home game against the
St. Louis Rams. Shane Matthews, who has started the last four games, will be demoted to the No. 3 QB.
Spurrier said he will make an announcement later this week as to who will be the starter.
"We're going to get them both ready to play and hopefully they'll be able to go through the rest of the season," Spurrier said referring that Wuerffel and Ramsey would probably split time at QB for the remaining six games. "I just think we need to give these younger guys a little bit opportunity to see how they can do."
The Redskins are 4-6 and are coming off a 19-17 loss to the New York Giants on Sunday. The 32-year-old Matthews completed just 15-of-35 passes for 113 yards and two touchdowns. He has completed 124-of-237 passes for 1,251 yards with 11 TDs and six interceptions this season.
The 23-year-old Ramsey, a rookie from Tulane, has started in two of the five games he's played in this season. He has completed 51-of-102 passes for 723 yards with three touchdowns and five interceptions. Ramsey lost in both of his starts, to New Orleans October 13 and to Green Bay the following week.
The 28-year-old Wuerffel, in his sixth NFL season, has started in one of the four games he's played in this year. He has connected on just 8-of-14 passes for 82 yards and has been picked off twice. Wuerffel started October 6 at Tennessee, but left after the first series with a right shoulder injury.
"We're struggling on offense, and it's certainly is not all Shane's fault," said Spurrier. "Protection at times was not very good at all yesterday."
Spurrier also said safety Sam Shade will miss the remainder of the season due to a neck injury.
