Laramie, WY (My Sportsbook) - The University of Wyoming has fired head football coach Vic Koenning, effective at the end of this season. The Cowboys have struggled to a 2-9 record this year. Koenning became the head coach in 2000 and since then Wyoming is 5-28, including a 1-19 mark in the Mountain West Conference. "The Cowboys had just one quality win (Air Force October 26 this year) in three seasons," Wyoming athletics director Lee Moon said. "The success of any program, ultimately, is measured by wins and losses. The University of Wyoming football program needed a change in leadership." The 42-year-old Koenning had been Wyoming's defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach for three seasons prior to being named head coach December 13, 1999. He came to Wyoming from the University of Memphis where he served as the defensive secondary coach for six seasons. Wyoming finishes its season with a game at New Mexico November 30. Koenning's base salary was $105,524 per year.
