Pittsburgh, PA (My Sportsbook) -
Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Tommy Maddox is improving after suffering a concussion and a spinal cord injury in Sunday's game against Tennessee. Maddox was up and walking around on Monday and was admitted to a Pittsburgh hospital later in the day for precautionary tests.
Maddox was taken from the field by ambulance after getting injured on the final play of the third quarter as he attempted to scramble out of the pocket. While falling to the ground and throwing the ball away, he was hit high by Keith Bulluck and was motionless on the field. Maddox was immobilized on a stretcher after a long delay and taken to Baptist Hospital.
"We are certainly quite happy with his progress. His official diagnosis is a brain or cerebral concussion, and a spinal cord concussion, not contusion," said Dr. Anthony Yates. "He has had several studies at Baptist that have included plane x-rays of his spine. He had x-rays of other body parts, as well as an MRI and a CT scan, none of which have revealed any structural damage."
Additional tests will be performed on Maddox before any further speculation about his return to the field. He will be hospitalized at Presbyterian Hospital, UPMC where a neurosurgeon, Dr. Joseph Maroon who is an international expert in concussions and this type of injury, will be overseeing his care.
The former MVP of the now-defunct XFL, Maddox replaced Kordell Stewart, who had started 30 straight games for the Steelers, in week five. He turned around a struggling Pittsburgh offense with his play and threw for an astonishing 473 yards last Sunday against Atlanta.
Stewart came in for Maddox on Sunday and completed 13 of his 17 passes for 124 yards and two scores to lead a late rally, but the comeback attempt came up short as the Steelers (5-4-1) lost for the first time in six weeks.
Maddox was drafted by Denver in 1992 (25th overall) after leaving college following his sophomore season at UCLA. He played four years in the NFL with the Broncos, Rams and Giants before getting back into the league with the Steelers last season.
