New York, NY (My Sportsbook) - The Mighty Ducks of Anaheim try to continue their domination of the
New York Rangers tonight when the teams meet at Madison Square Garden.
Anaheim has won three consecutive clashes with New York, and is 7-1-1 in the last nine overall. The Ducks are 3-0-1 in their last four trips to MSG, dating back to December 27, 1996.
Currently, the Ducks are 5-0-0-2 in their last seven games, including a 2-0-0-2 clip in the first four installments of a five-game road trip. On Sunday they posted a 5-1 victory over Atlanta, as Patric Kjellberg, Kevin Sawyer and Niclas Havelid all tallied during a three-goal second period. Rookie Stanislav Chistov and Petr Sykora also scored, while goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere turned aside 27 shots.
Giguere has started 10 consecutive games, during which Anaheim has gone 6-1-1-2 and allowed more than three goals just once.
Chistov continued to impress in his first NHL season. The third-overall selection in the 2001 Entry Draft, he is tied for the rookie lead in both goals (five) and points (12).
Already off to the best 19-game start in franchise history, the Mighty Ducks, who have 21 points, can top their best 20-game opening with a point tonight. In 1997-98 and 1999-2000, Anaheim earned 21 points in its first 20 contests.
The Ducks, 4-0-1-2 in their last seven road games, will head home after tonight and begin a five-game Pond set on Friday versus Dallas.
New York, meanwhile, had a two-game winning streak snapped via Saturday's 3-1 loss to Vancouver in the last of a four-game trip. Captain Mark Messier's team-leading eighth goal of the season was the lone source of offense for the Rangers, who were once again without goaltender Mike Richter.
Richter, who hasn't played since November 5, has been diagnosed with a concussion and is sidelined indefinitely. Richter sustained the injury against the Oilers on the 5th when he was accidentally kneed in the head by Edmonton's Todd Marchant. Dan Blackburn, who made 25 saves on Saturday, has started every game in Richter's absence.
The Rangers continue to search for production from two of their marquee names, Eric Lindros and Pavel Bure. Lindros has gone 15 games without a goal, while Bure's slump has reached nine. Bure is still second on the team with seven tallies, while Lindros' only two goals of the season were scored on October 17 against Buffalo.
New York, 4-5-1 at MSG, plays three of its next four games, including tonight's, on home ice. The lone exception is Thursday's venture across the Hudson to take on New Jersey at the Meadowlands.
