(My Sportsbook) - The Hurricanes' franchise-record nine-game homestand finally came to an end Tuesday night, in the form of a 4-4 tie against the
Ottawa Senators.
But Carolina was likely sorry to see the mammoth set finish, as Paul Maurice's troops concluded without a regulation loss in the nine matches (4-0-3-2).
On Tuesday is was the BBC Line of Rod Brind'Amour, Bates Battaglia and Eric Cole carrying the load as they did so often during last spring's playoffs. The trio accounted for three goals and three assists as the Canes rallied from a 2-0 deficit to pick up the point.
"I've never seen nine home games in a row," Brind'Amour said. "I'm surprised we didn't get real stale. That's the good thing, we got some points out of these games. That could have really hurt us.
"Now we've got to find a way to get back to our road game, which it seems like we haven't played all year. Changing gears will be good for us."
Brind'Amour's concerns will be addressed starting Thursday night, when the Canes will open a three-game trek in Boston against the Eastern Conference- leading Bruins.
On Tuesday, Carolina scored twice within a span of 53 seconds early in the third period to grab a 3-2 lead. The Hurricanes knotted the contest on Battaglia's second goal of the season at 2:27. Following a giveaway in the Ottawa zone, he took a pass from Brind'Amour and one-timed a shot from the left circle past Ottawa goaltender Patrick Lalime.
Captain Ron Francis then put Carolina in front at 3:20. Jeff O'Neill attempted a backhander from the left circle that was blocked in front. However, the puck rolled to Francis in the slot and he tucked it underneath the goaltender for his seventh tally of the year.
However, after the teams exchanged tallies later in the frame, Ottawa's Radek Bonk knotted things for good when he beat Kevin Weekes gloveside with 6:15 to go in regulation.
"I thought we had [that] one for sure," Brind'Amour, who paces the team with nine goals, added. "We should have wrapped that up."
Carolina had its share of chances to re-gain the lead and take the victory, but Lalime held strong in the Ottawa net. He made four saves in the extra session, and received some help from the crossbar on a Jan Hlavac shot during an OT power play.
Weekes, meanwhile, made his 11th consecutive start between then pipes while incumbent Arturs Irbe continued to man his spot at the end of the bench. Weekes is third in the NHL with a 1.87 goals-against average and leads the league with a .937 save-percentage, and would be in the running if there was a Vezina Trophy awarded at the quarter-season mark. Tuesday's outing marked the first time in nearly a month that he allowed more than two goals.
