Denver, CO (My Sportsbook) - Sebastien Bourdais captured Sunday's Centrix Financial Grand Prix of Denver Champ Car race. The No.2 Newman/Haas Racing Lola started on the pole but spun out in the first turn and came from 13th place to take the checkered flag.
The Frenchman crossed the finish line 7.446 seconds ahead of runner-up Paul Tracy. The victory was his fifth of the season and eighth of his Champ Car career.
Bourdais' day started off poorly, but the Newman/Haas driver and his team never gave up. As the field came to the first turn, teammate Bruno Junqueira and Bourdais clipped each other and the series points leader spun out. By the time he got faced in the right direction and restarted, he was in 13th place.
Bourdais didn't panic, although afterwards he didn't think he could come all the way back to win the race.
By lap 20 Bourdais was in seventh place and by lap 32 he made his first appearance in the top-five.
Meanwhile, Junqueira held the top spot for the first 39 laps before a quick pit stop put Tracy in first place. Tracy, who led a race-high 40 laps held the lead until Bourdais made his final move on lap 79. He used his "push-to-pass" button on the back stretch and beat Tracy into turn nine and the race was over.
"He came from the back to the front," said Tracy. "He had a perfect car all weekend and there was nothing I could do."
By lap 81, Bourdais had a 2.464-second lead and he expanded his lead to the checkered flag.
"I knew I had a good car and as long as I would not go a lap down, I knew I could come back," said Bourdais. "I never thought I could win the race until half the distance and then everything was going so fast, we were coming back so quickly, I thought 'maybe,'"
Junqueira, Mario Dominguez and A.J. Allmendinger completed the top-five.
Bourdais now owns a 248-192 lead over his teammate after nine events. Defending series champion Tracy (180) is third, 68 points back, followed by Alex Tagliani (164) and Patrick Carpentier (154).
The next race in the championship, the Molson Indy Montreal, is scheduled for Sunday, August 29th.
