Boston, MA (My Sportsbook) - The
Boston Bruins, who are tied for the National Hockey League's second-best record, try to get back on track tonight when they welcome the Carolina Hurricanes to the FleetCenter.
Since a four-game winning streak, the B's are 0-1-1, including Tuesday's 2-0 road loss to Toronto. The clubs skated two scoreless periods before the Leafs tallied twice in the opening 4:46 of the third. Goaltender Ed Belfour took care of the rest, and halted all 29 Boston shots on the evening.
Tuesday's match marked the first shutout this season against the Bruins, who have looked like an offensive juggernaut on some nights. They rank third in the NHL with 61 goals-for in 18 games -- an average of 3.39 per-contest.
The Bruins can inch closer to a couple franchise milestones with a win tonight. They are two wins shy of their 1,500th all-time home victory, and two short of their 2,500th triumph overall. The Montreal Canadiens are currently the only NHL team to have reached those plateaus.
Boston, 5-1-1 on FleetCenter ice, begins a four-game homestand tonight. The set resumes Saturday against Buffalo, and will also includes visits from Calgary and Montreal. In all, the B's play seven of their next eight games in Beantown.
Carolina, meanwhile, is on the road after a franchise-record nine-game homestand that ended with Tuesday's 4-4 tie versus Ottawa. The mammoth set concluded without a regulation loss in the nine matches (4-0-3-2).
On Tuesday is was the BBC Line of Rod Brind'Amour, Bates Battaglia and Eric Cole carrying the load as they did so often during last spring's playoffs. The trio accounted for three goals and three assists as the 'Canes rallied from a 2-0 deficit to pick up the point. Ron Francis also tallied, while goaltender Kevin Weekes made 32 saves.
Weekes made his 11th consecutive start between then pipes while incumbent Arturs Irbe continued to man his spot at the end of the bench. Weekes is third in the NHL with a 1.87 goals-against average and leads the league with a .937 save percentage.
On the milestone watch, Francis is one goal shy of tying former Whalers teammate Pat Verbeek for 23rd place on the NHL's all-time list (520).
Carolina, which will play its first road game since a 4-2 win over New Jersey on October 29, hasn't lost in regulation in its last 11 games overall (5-0-4-2). The 'Canes, who are 2-2-0-1 on hostile ice, begin a three-game trek this evening and will visit Montreal on Saturday.
The Hurricanes and Bruins split four games last season, with each team winning twice in the other's rink. Carolina has won four of the last six meetings overall, and is 8-1-1 in its last 10 trips to Beantown.
