Los Angeles, CA (My Sportsbook) - University of Southern California running back Hershel Dennis, slated to be the starting tailback this season, has been suspended indefinitely for disciplinary reasons.
The Los Angeles Daily News is reporting head coach Pete Carroll levied the suspension as a result of a party Sunday night near the university, where an alleged sexual assault took place.
The alleged victim, a female friend of Dennis', reportedly told police Dennis was at the party but has not formally accused him of sexually assaulting her. She also identified a pair of other players at the apartment where the incident allegedly occurred, but did not accuse them of wrongdoing, according to a source close to the investigation.
Charges have yet to be filed, police told the paper, and repeated a previous statement that police are "conducting an investigation into an allegation of sexual assault that may involve a member or members of the USC football team."
According to the report, a party with less than 20 people -- mostly players and acquaintances -- took place at the Cardinal Gardens apartment complex across the street from the university Sunday night. The alleged victim arrived after 11 p.m., when players were supposed to be in bed.
Part of Dennis' suspension was due to the fact that he broke curfew.
"It's indefinite," Carroll said of the suspension. "That's a word that you would use in this case. I haven't really labeled it."
Sources told the Daily News that there is also a possibility Dennis' status could be reviewed by the end of the week and he could be reinstated next week.
The 5-foot-11, 190-pound Dennis, who is heading into his junior season at age 20, rushed for 661 yards and four touchdowns last season.
The Trojans open their season on August 28 against Virginia Tech.
